Scienceworks – Plan Your Visit

Mobility Access: The entire museum is pram and wheelchair accessible, featuring a lift system and ramps to connect all exhibition levels and public spaces.

Mobility Hire: Standard-size wheelchairs and a mobility scooter are available free of charge from the Information Desk, though advance booking is highly recommended.

Restrooms & Parent Rooms: Accessible toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, and designated Parents’ Rooms with changing tables are available near the main entrance and the Ground Up exhibition.

Lockers: Lockers are typically available near the entrance for securely storing coats, bags, and other personal items while you explore.

Companion Card: Scienceworks honors the Companion Card, allowing carers and attendants free entry.

You are welcome to dine at the on-site cafe or enjoy a picnic with a view.

The Scienceworks Cafe: Located opposite the Amphitheatre, this main cafe offers gourmet sandwiches, salads, hot dishes, and family-friendly snacks.

The Elements Cafe: This outdoor outpost on the Arena, with views of the Pumping Station, operates on weekends, school holidays, and during high-traffic periods, weather permitting.

Picnic Areas: Dedicated indoor and outdoor picnic areas are available if you prefer to bring your own food and drinks.

Ramps and Lifts: All exhibition galleries, public spaces, and the main building areas are accessible via ramps and/or lifts. The historic Pumping Station also has ramp access.

Wheelchair & Scooter Hire: Standard wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge from the Information Desk in the foyer. A mobility scooter is also available for loan; advance booking is recommended.

Planetarium & Lightning Room Seating: Dedicated accessible spaces are available in both the Melbourne Planetarium and the Lightning Theatre. We advise arriving 10-15 minutes early to secure your spot.

Accessible Parking: Dedicated accessible parking bays are available in the main car park, located near the building entrance.

Sensory Bags: Free sensory bags containing noise reduction earmuffs, fidget tools, and communication cards can be borrowed from the Information Desk.

Sensory Map: Scienceworks provides a Sensory Friendly Map that indicates areas of the museum with high or low sensory stimuli (e.g., loud noises, high crowds) to help visitors plan their route.

Low Sensory Sessions: The museum offers Low Sensory Sessions on the first Saturday of every month, where loud music and bright flashing lights are dimmed or muted across the galleries.

Social Stories: Detailed social stories for neurodiverse visitors and their families are available on the official Museums Victoria website to help prepare for the visit.

Assistance Animals: Guide dogs and all other registered assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museum.

Hearing Augmentation: Hearing loops are installed in several key presentation spaces, including the Melbourne Planetarium, Lightning Theatre, and the Amphitheatre.

Toilets and Changing: Accessible toilets, family toilets, and parents’ rooms are located on the ground floor of the main building and near the Ground Up Exhibition.

The museum is easily reached via the Werribee/Williamstown train line (to Spotswood Station) or the Route 472 bus, and offers on-site parking.

Scienceworks is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Sunday.

The final entry for the day is at 4:00 PM.

We recommend allowing approximately 2 to 4 hours to explore all the exhibitions fully.

Please note that Scienceworks is closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day (25 December).
