The museum is situated under the grand arc of the West Gate Bridge, next to the historic Spotswood Pumping Station.
Public transport is a great, stress-free way to get to Scienceworks. We recommend using the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) Journey Planner to map your specific route.
Train: The closest train station is Spotswood Station on the Werribee and Williamstown lines. From there, it’s approximately a 10-minute walk to the museum. Follow the signs to Scienceworks as you exit the station.
Bus: Several bus routes service the area. The Route 472 bus stops directly outside the museum on Booker Street.
Driving to Scienceworks is a popular option, with dedicated parking available on-site.
From the Melbourne CBD, take the West Gate Freeway and exit at the Scienceworks/Spotswood sign. Follow the signs to the museum.
Parking: A large, paid car park is available at Scienceworks.
Monday – Thursday: $5 per day
Friday – Sunday: $8 per day
Note: Parking can get very busy on weekends and during school holidays, especially with the nearby Grazeland food market. We recommend arriving early or considering public transport during these peak times. Limited street parking is also available on Hudson Road and Simcock Avenue.
For a scenic and eco-friendly journey, Scienceworks is located near several major cycling paths, including those along the Maribyrnong River and Hudsons Road.
Bicycle racks are available near the main entrance for secure parking.
For a unique trip, you can take the Westgate Punt ferry service, which operates daily from Fisherman’s Bend.
The ferry service lands close to Scienceworks, offering a different approach to the museum.
Things to Know Before Visiting Scienceworks
Scienceworks requires all visitors (including those eligible for free entry) to book tickets online in advance.
Your general admission ticket covers entry to the museum’s core interactive exhibitions. Separate, paid tickets are required to experience the famous Melbourne Planetarium shows and the electrifying Lightning Room demonstrations.
Entry to the main museum is free for children aged 16 and under (though specific show tickets are still required).
The Planetarium and Lightning Room run multiple sessions daily, and these shows are very popular. Check the daily schedule board immediately upon arrival to secure show tickets and plan your visit around them.
Scienceworks tends to be quieter on weekdays during school term, particularly after 3:00 PM. If you prefer a less crowded experience, target these times.
We recommend allowing between 2 to 4 hours to comfortably explore the exhibits, plus additional time for any Planetarium or Lightning Room sessions you book.
On-site paid parking is available, but space can be limited, especially on Fridays, weekends, and during school holidays due to the nearby Grazeland market. Consider taking the train to Spotswood Station instead.
There is a cafe on-site offering snacks and meals. Scienceworks also has designated indoor and outdoor picnic areas if you prefer to bring your own food.
The entire museum is pram-friendly, with lift and ramp access throughout the galleries and public areas.
Limited locker facilities are usually available in the main foyer for storing personal items while you explore.

Companion Card: Scienceworks honors the Companion Card, allowing carers and attendants free entry.

The Scienceworks Cafe: Located opposite the Amphitheatre, this main cafe offers gourmet sandwiches, salads, hot dishes, and family-friendly snacks.
The Elements Cafe: This outdoor outpost on the Arena, with views of the Pumping Station, operates on weekends, school holidays, and during high-traffic periods, weather permitting.

Planetarium & Lightning Room Seating: Dedicated accessible spaces are available in both the Melbourne Planetarium and the Lightning Theatre. We advise arriving 10-15 minutes early to secure your spot.
Accessible Parking: Dedicated accessible parking bays are available in the main car park, located near the building entrance.
Sensory Bags: Free sensory bags containing noise reduction earmuffs, fidget tools, and communication cards can be borrowed from the Information Desk.
